PLATE TECTONICS IN ACTION
LAKE SUNAPEE 02 08 2012: PLATE TECTONICS IN ACTION
hopefully the loons are long gone; but I did see a few in nyc, see next email. joe
the ice plates on lake sunapee have been in action for about 6 weeks. this is the first time in 20 years that I have observed this phenomenon in such detail.
the ice sheet is at least a foot thick and cars have been seen on the lake. the warm weather and rain a few weeks back flattened the surface of the lack to an ice sheet. in fact, today (2/12/2012) folks were ice sailing at dangerous speeds near bemis point; remember a few years back when two brothers crashed into each other, killing at least one of them.
but, the plates continue churn, groan, crack and occasionally produce a loud boom. I estimate the ice/snow mountains to be about 48 inches high at certain points along the rift. after applying an actuarial extrapolation to 20,000' mount mckinley, I estimate that we should have big booms, (quakes) around mckinley every 15 years or so.
