I remember as a young actuary, circ 1960, studying demographics for the actuarial examinations. It was a required examination subject. I was one of the few people at the time that was facile with computer, which were large mainframe type calculating machines. In any event, in good fashion I projected the earth's population to max out in 2050 at about 8 billion folks. My model was reasonably sophifisticated considering the state of computer technology. I factored in fertility rates by region of the world, and expectations of economic growth patterns that might slow down the fertility rates, as well as morbidity and mortality trends.
The current estimates by the UN show the median estimate to be about 9 billion in 2050 and slightly declining after that. See the following link to wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population .
Of course, the advances in technology that are upon us will change the paradigm. Ray Kurzweil argues very powerfully in the "The Singularity is Near," that people may have the opportunity to "live forever." And I for one, believe Ray Kurzweil is on the money. see also: Predictions Made by Ray Kurzweil.
If population explodes, and life gets crowded here on earth, others have found clever ways to use space efficiently. Watch the folowing scenario:CONTINUE:
You are the pilot...Good Luck! Chance to show your knowledge of world locations :) HYou are the pilots gang. Lots of fun. Good luck. INT: Study the map BEFORE you begin. Time moves quickly. Otherwise, all this takes is a little travel and history knowledge.
The link is to a game where you are the pilot of a plane taking off from the US - each time, the plane leaves, you are told the destination. Good Luck on your Geography!
Don't get too excited when the plane lands where you selected. It always does. A line is then drawn to where it should have landed and your result is based on the difference in the two locations! Try to land an airplane in the city they call for.
The closer the more points. Not sure how well this works with a cell phone. Thinking it doesn’t, that you need a PC or laptop. Also think that Joe Brophy will max this out.
I would love to see a game like this focused on the Far East, Africa and the Middle East, and Latin America. Actually one that focuses on major cities and North American locations that appear almost weekly in the newspapers and magazines would be even more fun. Good Luck!!! Man struck by lightning twice and walks away? Any follow up on this event? Huh??
DON'T BE FOOLED. The video has been touched up! A camera takes about 24 fps (CLICK WIKI LINK - frames per second). In the first strike only one frame was altered. That frame shows a lightning bold that is wider than the person struck. A real bolt of that thickness would kill a few elephants. BEWARE OF PHOTOSHOP. Most photos used by the media, particularly military action photos, have been touched up if there is an opportunity to make a political statement. SHAME SHAME ON THE MEDIA.
This is pretty cool. It’s a good example of time lapse photography and it's uses. Place your cursor at the top of the photo. You will notice it is 6:10 PM. Bring the mouse down slowly over the photo without pressing the button On the mouse. Do not right or left click.
Night time appears, the lights come on, and at 7:40 PM, it's dark! CLICK HERE FOR PHOTO
